What Does 'Due on Receipt' Mean on an Invoice?

It means "pay now." In practice, clients read it as "soon", which is why a real date works better.

Invoice marked due on receipt arriving in an email inbox

Due on receipt means the invoice should be paid as soon as the customer receives it. There's no grace period like Net 14 or Net 30.

Legally and practically, "as soon as" isn't precise. Most customers treat due on receipt as "within a few days." Many businesses use it successfully; others find it gets them paid later than a clear, short deadline would.

When due on receipt fits

  • Consumers and one-off customers: tutoring, cleaning, repairs, photography sessions, event services
  • Small amounts, where there's no reason to wait
  • Work already completed and accepted by the customer on the spot
  • Final invoices after a project the client has already signed off
  • Customers with a history of late payment

When it doesn't

  • Large companies. Their accounts payable process runs on fixed cycles (often Net 30 or more) and won't speed up because your invoice says "due on receipt." It may even get flagged as non-standard.
  • Clients who need approval from someone else before paying.
  • Big invoices, where the client needs time to arrange funds.

For business clients, Net 7 or Net 14 is usually faster in practice than "due on receipt", because it gives a concrete date that their payment run can hit.

Why a date beats the phrase

Compare:

The second gives the customer a date to put in their diary, and gives you a clear day to follow up on. A date turns a vague expectation into a deadline.

Getting paid quickly without saying "due on receipt"

  • Take payment at the time of service. A card reader or a payment link sent before you leave the job makes an invoice unnecessary. Give a receipt instead.
  • Include a payment link in the invoice email.
  • Send the invoice immediately, from your phone, while the customer is happy with the work.
  • Use short, explicit terms: "Due within 3 days (by 2 September)."

Choose “Due on receipt” in the generator and today's date is set as the due date.

Is it enforceable?

Due on receipt is a valid payment term if the customer agreed to it before the work. If it appears for the first time on the invoice, a customer could argue they never agreed. As with any term, put it in your quote or agreement first.

For late payment consequences, the same rules apply as for any terms. See late fees on invoices.

Term Means
Due on receipt Pay immediately
Upon receipt Same thing
Payable on receipt Same thing
COD Cash (or payment) on delivery
CIA / PIA Cash / payment in advance
Net 7 Within 7 days of the invoice date

Examples by business type

  • Mobile mechanic or handyman: "Payment due on completion of work" and a card reader or payment link in hand works better than an invoice at all.
  • Photographer (portrait session): session fee paid at booking; the final invoice for prints is due on receipt, before delivery.
  • Freelancer, small business client: "Due within 7 days" is usually a better fit than due on receipt.
  • Event services: balance due on receipt of the final invoice, sent before the event date.

When a due-on-receipt invoice isn't paid

Because the due date is the invoice date, your reminder schedule starts straight away:

  1. Day 3: a friendly reminder, invoice attached, with a payment link.
  2. Day 7: a firmer note that asks for a payment date.
  3. Day 14: a phone call.

From there, follow the same escalation as any overdue invoice. See payment reminder templates.

Frequently asked

How many days is "due on receipt"? Technically zero. In practice, most businesses allow a few days before treating it as late. If you have a specific expectation, write it: "Due within 3 days."

Is due on receipt rude? No. It's normal for consumer services and small jobs. For corporate clients, it can look unrealistic, so use short net terms instead.

Can I charge a late fee on a due-on-receipt invoice? Only if your agreement says so, and within what local law allows.
