Ledger invoice template example

Ledger

Best for: General services, retail, most small businesses.

The table header carries your color, so the line items read clearly even on a long invoice. It's the safest default.

Use the Ledger template
Headline invoice template example

Headline

Best for: Agencies, studios, creative freelancers.

A full-width color band holds the title and the amount due. It looks designed without making the details hard to find.

Use the Headline template
Minimal invoice template example

Minimal

Best for: Designers, consultants, writers.

Thin rules and generous margins. The amount due sits under a single line in your accent color.

Use the Minimal template
Amount first invoice template example

Amount first

Best for: Anyone who gets paid late.

The balance due and due date sit in a highlighted box at eye level. Accounts payable staff see what to pay and when before anything else.

Use the Amount first template
Sidebar invoice template example

Sidebar

Best for: Personal brands, coaches, photographers.

Your details, invoice number and dates live in a color column on the left, leaving the right side for the work itself.

Use the Sidebar template
Duplicate book invoice template example

Duplicate book

Best for: Trades, repair shops, mobile services.

Boxed fields and a red number, modeled on the carbonless invoice pads many tradespeople still carry.

Use the Duplicate book template
Job sheet invoice template example

Job sheet

Best for: Contractors, builders, landscapers.

A four-cell strip for number, date, due date and job reference, plus an optional job site address instead of a shipping address.

Centered serif heading and double rules. Reads like firm letterhead.

Use the Formal template

Corporate

Best for: B2B suppliers, IT services, wholesale.

Four fact cards across the top (number, date, due date, amount) that large clients' AP teams can scan quickly.

Narrow receipt invoice template example

Narrow receipt

Best for: Receipts, market stalls, small cash sales.

A compact single column with dashed dividers, closer to a till receipt than a letter.

Online template vs Word, Excel or Google Docs

A downloadable Word or Excel invoice template is fine for the first invoice. The problems show up by the tenth: formulas that break when you add a row, a logo that jumps around, and an invoice number you have to remember to change by hand. People search for “invoice template Google Docs” and “invoice template Excel” in huge numbers, and most of those templates are the same table with different fonts.

An online template separates your details from the layout. You type the client and the work once; the math is done for you; switching the design doesn't mean retyping. “Start the next invoice” keeps your business details and bumps the number.

Where a spreadsheet still wins: if you want every invoice in one file to total up for the year, or you need to change the layout in ways no template allows. Our templates vs invoicing software guide covers when each makes sense.

How to choose a layout

Pick for the person paying, not for yourself. A large company's accounts payable clerk wants the invoice number, due date and amount instantly. The Corporate and Amount first layouts put those front and center. A private client hiring a photographer cares more that it looks like it came from a real business, which is where Headline and Sidebar work well. Trades get paid faster with the Job sheet or Duplicate book layouts because they match what customers expect from a contractor.

Whichever you choose, keep it. Clients learn where to look on your invoice, and consistency looks professional.
